3rd Grade Weekly Announcements April 24-28, 2017

Reminders:

Soaring Eagles 5K on Saturday, April 29, 2017.  It’s not too late to sign up!!!

We will not have school mass on Wednesday, April 26, 2017.  Students may wear regular uniform.

We should be ready to send our book, Diary of a 3rd Grader to the publisher on Wednesday.  If you have not sent in your order, please do so by Tuesday, April 26, 2016. Even if you do not wish to purchase a book, please return the form with your signature and mark no thank you.  If we have all forms returned, we can earn a free copy for our school library.  Thank you!!!

This week in 3rd Grade:

Reading:  Essential question:  How does weather affect us?  Students will read historical fiction stories, The Big Blizzard and Nora’s Ark.  Text based comprehension through making, predicting, and revising.  Reading vocab quiz on Friday, April 28, 2017.

Spelling:  Consonant + le Syllables.  Spelling test on Friday, April 28, 2017.  Please study the following words:  able, handle, castle, towel, travel, purple, eagle, little, nickel, tunnel, riddle, puzzle, pickle, camel, squirrel, preschool, rebuild, unlucky, motel, couple

Math:  Using number lines to compare fractions

3rd Grade Weekly Announcements April 17-21, 2017

This week in 3rd Grade:

Reading:  Essential question:  How do you decide what is important?  Students will read myths and drama’s.  On Friday, following the spelling and reading test, students will make puppets and perform the play, King Midas and the Golden Touch.  Text based comprehension through making, confirming, and revising predictions.  Reading comprehension and vocabulary test on Friday, April 21, 2017.

Spelling:  Prefixes un, re, pre, and dis.  Spelling Test on Friday, April 21, 2017.  Please study the following words:  disagreed, prepaid, previous, resell, unlucky, dislike, preschool, rebuild, reprint, untied, disappear, precook, return, unwrap, unbeaten, robot, tiny, label,unknown, recover

Language:  adjectives and articles a, an, and the

Math:  Unit 10, Comparing Fractions

Social Studies:  Our Government.  Students will begin an in class project.  They will create a lapbook all about our government.  This will count as a test grade.

This Week in 3rd Grade:

Reading:  We will be working on our on book titled Dear 3rd Grade Diary.  Students will be working on their pages, editing, rewriting, and illustrating.  Order forms will be sent home this week.  If everyone purchases a book, we will receive a free book for our school library.  No vocabulary this week.  However we will still have some short reading comprehension tests on Tuesday, April 15, 2017.

Spelling:  Days of the week and Months of the year.  Spelling test on Thursday, April 16, 2017.  Please study the following words:  Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December

Language:  Punctuation, Capitalization, and grammar.  Grammar test on Wednesday, April 15, 2017.  Please use study guide that will be sent home on Monday to help prepare for the test.

Dear Parents,

3rd Grade Weekly Announcements April 3-7, 2017

Thank you to all the parents that joined us on our field trip to El Galeon.  The morning was a huge success and we wouldn’t have been able to do it without you!!

This Friday, April 7, 2017 is Field Day.  A list will go home on Monday with the color of shirt your child is to wear.  🙂

This week in 3rd Grade:

Reading:  Essential question for the week: What are forms of energy?  Students will read expository texts, Here Comes Solar Power, and It’s All in the Wind.  Text based comprehension through cause and effect.  Reading vocabulary quiz on Friday, April 7, 2017.

Spelling:  Open syllables CVC.  Spelling test on Friday, April 7, 2017.  Please study the following words:  pilot, favor, cover, tiny, silent, diner, lemon, shady, label, spider, tiger, planet, robot, cozy, frozen, tried, hurried, studying, melon, stomach

Language:  Pronoun-verb contractions

Math: Fractional parts as mixed numbers

Science: Classifying animals, vertebrates and non-vertebrates

Social Studies:  Checks and balances and levels of government.  Students can begin to recite the presidents in order when they are ready.  The final day for this will be on April 12, 2017.

3rd Grade Weekly Announcements Mar. 27-31, 2017

Welcome back!!  I hope you all enjoyed the past week.  We couldn’t have asked for better weather.  Can you believe we only have 9 weeks of school left??  This year has flown by!!

Wednesday, March 29, 2017, 3rd Quarter awards following mass.

If you are able to drive for class field trips, please email me at michelle.cool@sjseagles.org as soon as possible.  You may have noticed the El Galeon is docked in the marina.  They leave this Sunday and I would love to take the kids on half day field trip to go tour the ship. I still need to clear this with the office, but I will be getting all the details tomorrow on my first break.  More info to follow!!

I am also working a field trip to Gulf World.  I have contacted the bus service, and the cost to rent a bus for the day is very expensive.  Again, if you are able to drive, please let me know ASAP.  Thank you!!!

Please send in a dozen plastic eggs for your child by this Friday, March 31, 2017.  We will not have an egg hunt, but we will be doing a nice Lenten project.  Thank you!!

This week in 3rd Grade:

Reading:  Essential question for the week, What do good citizens do?  Students will read biographies Dolores Huerta:  Growing up Strong and Elizabeth Leads the Way.  Text based comprehension through asking and answering questions, and author’s point of view.  The grades on the  last reading comprehension test were not very good.  With that being said, I will only count the vocabulary portion as a quiz grade and we will have a reading comprehension and vocabulary test on Friday, Mar. 31, 2017.

During the season of Lent, 3rd grade has decided they will give up one day of recess to pray the Rosary.  Every Thursday, immediately following lunch, we will walk to the church and begin.  Parents, you are more than welcome to join us.  We should be finished in less than 30 min.

3rd Grade Weekly Announcements Mar.6-10, 2017

Reminders:

This week we will begin ITBS Testing. Testing will begin Monday, Mar. 6, 2017 and end on Thursday, Mar. 9, 2017.   Here are a few helpful tips so that your child will perform their best:

-Get a good night’s sleep.  Don’t stay up too late watching T.V. or playing video games.

-Eat a good healthy breakfast.  Try to stay away from items loaded down with sugar.

-Be at school on time.  As soon as roll and lunch is taken, we get started with testing.

There will not be any homework or testing this week.  However, we will have some catching up to do before we leave for Spring Break.  Students will have all materials needed to help prepare for their tests this Friday and will be able to begin preparing for tests over the weekend.

3rd Grade Weekly Announcements Feb. 21-24, 2017

Reminders: 

For those who haven’t heard, I will be out from Feb. 21-27, 2017.  I will be away on my daughter’s 8th Grade field trip, but school will continue as normal.  🙂  All lesson plans are ready to go and Ms. Natalie is ready to step in.  I hope you all have a great week and can’t wait to see everyone when I get back.

Don;t forget to send in your money for the on campus field trip.  All money and permission slips is due by Feb. 22, 2017.

3rd Grade will be hosting mass this week on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017.  If you would like to join us, mass begins promptly at 8:15.

Finally, thank you so much to all those who sent in treats for our Valentine’s Party.  It was a huge success and the class really enjoyed all the snacks. Thank you too for all my wonderful treats.  Ya’ll are the best!!!

3rd Grade Weekly Announcements Feb. 13-17, 2017

Reminders:

We will have our class Valentine Party on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017.  Thank you to the parents that are sending in treats for the party.  We will be watching A Charlie Brown Valentine and exchanging Valentines after lunch around 1:00.

Friday, Feb. 17, 2017 will be an early dismissal day.

There is No school on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017.

Just a reminder, I will be out from Feb. 21-27th on my daughters class field trip.  Much to the dismay of the class, lessons will continue as usual.  I have been getting everything ready for the guest teacher so everything should run quite smoothly.  🙂

Spelling:  Soft c and g.  Spelling test on Friday, Sept. 17, 2017.  Please study the following words:  pounce, cents, mice, age, changes, placed, price, office, gyms, message, dice, space, wage, giant, pages, your, road, peace, giraffe, peaceful

Math:  Meanings of division.  Quick check quiz on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017.  Students need to study their math multiplication facts.  For extra practice, don’t forget to use IXL.

Social Studies:  Mexico our neighbor to the south.  Test on the Mexico unit on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017.  We will review in class on Monday and Tuesday.  Students will need to study the highlighted information and questions in their packet.
